About The Human Cost

The Human Cost is a publication about crime, psychology, and the people whose lives are forever altered by violence.

This is not a space for sensational headlines or glorified killers. There are already too many places that tell those stories. Instead, The Human Cost looks deeper: into the psychology behind violent acts, the motives that drive them, and the lasting aftermath for victims, families, and communities.

I write as a psychology student and as someone with a deep interest in understanding why people commit such unspeakable acts. But more importantly, I write with empathy — because victims are not footnotes. They were brothers, sisters, parents, friends, co-workers. They lived real lives that mattered.

Here, you’ll find:

  • Long-form essays that unpack infamous cases through a psychological lens

  • Profiles comparing offenders and exploring criminal motives

  • Reflections on the impact of violence on victims and society

  • Writing that is accessible, empathetic, and never sensationalised

About Me

My name is Salwa. I’m currently studying psychology and have always been fascinated by the human mind — especially the dark corners we often try to look away from. Crime, for me, isn’t about shock or spectacle; it’s about questions. What drives someone to cross a line most of us can’t imagine crossing? And what happens to the people left behind when they do?

Alongside this publication, I also write Quietly Becoming, a more personal space where I share essays on mental health, psychology, and everyday life. The Human Cost is a different kind of writing — part of my studies, part of my curiosity, and part of my need to bring empathy into a conversation that too often forgets its victims.

Thank you for being here,

Salwa
